Years ago, I had a lucid dream repeat over several nights. This repeating identical dream was about a light shining on top of a mountain.
As this dream began, I was in a desert of scarce vegetation, clumps of clay and stones underfoot. I was in a vast wasteland of a dry ancient river bed at the foot of a mountain with a sharply defined edge of a flat surface on its top.
When my eyes scanned across the horizon of the mountain above me, I realized a huge plateau loomed overhead. Though it was sunny and mid-day, there was an immense glow of radiant light emanating from the rim of that plateau. This luminance dominated the sky, delineating the plateau's edge, and beckoned me to climb so that I could find the source of light.
I walked closer to the bottom of the mountain cliff and looked straight up at the plateau's edge. There was a network of ravines containing smaller gullies carved and worn into the face of the cliff by countless years of running water from rains marking time. As I studied how to ascend the cliff, it made more sense to walk up one of these gullies than to get down on all fours to climb hand and foot up the steep cliff surface of loose stones. It would have been a shorter distance to climb straight up the cliff, but due to the slippery footing I would have experienced constant backsliding.
Though the trip up a gully was easier it presented a thought process. That path involved a myriad of forks requiring a decision to change directions. Since each gully was made by running water from the plateau above, obviously all the gullies led to the top. I realized going either left or right at a fork reached the radiant top. The experiences of each would be different depending upon the path I chose, but all paths lead to the plateau and ultimately to the source of the light.
As I climbed the gullies in my dream, the light at the plateau appeared brighter and brighter. It shone from the edge of the plateau, beckoning me to climb to the light far brighter than sunlight. I must climb to the light. The dream was about me moving toward the Light.
Similar to traveling the path of those gullies in my dream, as we experience life, we constantly choose the events we experience. When confronted with a choice, which direction will we choose? Life is about responsible decisions, but far more significant - we must open our heart and move toward the Light!
